- Natalie Middleton, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Bank of Harlan’s Outstanding Student Citizen of the Month for August.


- The Tenth REUNION for the “Coach Charles & Maxine Hunter” Scholarship Golf Scramble will be Saturday September 3, 2016 at the Harlan Country Club.  All profits will go to the “Coach Charles & Maxine Hunter Scholarship fund” and will be used to present a scholarship each year to a deserving area graduate through the Southeast Education Foundation, Inc. - HCHS Athletic Schedules: Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball
- There will be a Pumpkin Contest at the Harlan County Courthouse on October 31, 2016. The school with the most pumpkins entered wins a prize.

- The Harlan County High School Dance Team recently held a dance camp for children.  They performed at halftime of the Black Bears football game.   Pictured are the Dance Team members and their future dancers.   
- Jared Sizemore, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Bank of Harlan Outstanding Student Citizen of the Month for October.
- The Elgin Foundation, Dr. Matt Nunez and his staff, and the James A. Cawood Elementary School Family Resource and Youth Service Center partnered for a dental screening for all students who had obtained parental permission recently.

- Second graders offer untested meal prep tips for Thanksgiving meal
- Cumberland Elementary School's fourth grade class recently visited Portal 31 in Lynch
- This year the Harlan County High School Marching Black Bears started off the season with the Harlan Daily Enterprise Reader’s Choice award for the Best Local High School Band. The band directors are Alex Britton, Kevin Shepherd, Jeremy Bell, and Felicia Shepherd.
- David Turner, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Bank of Harlan Outstanding Student Citizen of the Month for November.


- Cumberland Elementary School students participated in the Quality Care for Kids program recently.
- A Christmas concert featuring the Harlan County High School Choir and the Harlan County Middle School Honor Choir will be held Thursday, December 8, at 7 p.m. at the Harlan County High School Auditorium. The choirs will join together for a finale that will feature more than 100 voices. The middle school choir is made up of students from across the district recommended by school personnel for their interest and potential in vocal performance. Admission is free, but a donation of a non-perishable can food item for the Kentucky State Police Cram the Cruiser food drive is encouraged.
- The Evarts Middle School Band Room has been refurbished as the program continues to grow.
- Rosspoint Elementary School took top honors in the Region 36 2016 Kentucky Governor’s Cup Sixth Grade Showcase on Saturday.
- The students and staff at the Harlan campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College entertained second graders from Evarts Elementary School on Tuesday.
- Harlan County High School won second place and Harlan Independent took third in the Section 13 2016 Kentucky Governor’s Cup JV Challenge held recently at Letcher County High School.
- The Harlan County High School Chapter of the National Beta Club has donated $1,000 to the fire relief effort in Sevier County, Tenn.

- The Harlan County High School Army JROTC has been volunteering at a distribution center in Sevier County, Tenn., an area ravaged by raging and deadly forest fires. The cadets are led by Senior Army Instructor Tim McElyea,  MAJ(RET).
- Teresa Roy’s fifth grade arts and humanities class at Evarts Elementary School recently began their unit on the study of music.
- Rosspoint Elementary School won first place in the 2016 Harlan County School District's elementary division of the Quick Recall Challenge. Evarts Elementary was second. Wallins finished third.

- William Bowling, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Bank of Harlan Outstanding Student Citizen of the Month for December.

- The HCHS Prom (Night at Tiffany's) is Saturday, May 6th. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, January 11th and can be purchased in room 122. Tickets are $50 and can only be bought before school, during first period and during lunch.

- Breanna Faulkner, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Bank of Harlan Outstanding Student Citizen of the Month for January.


- Evarts Elementary School will host a MIDTERM OPEN HOUSE on Thursday, February 02, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. *FREE Chili Supper will be served *Midterm Reports will be distributed *Parent & Teacher Conferences. All parents, students, and community members are invited to attend.

- Members of the Harlan County High School Choir recently participated in the Southeastern Kentucky Music Association's All-Festival Choir in London.
- Harlan County High School teacher Sandy Melton has been selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars.

- The Cat in the Hat visited students at Green Hills Elementary School on Tuesday. The Cat is making his rounds as part of the Dr. Seuss reading celebration. Students heard the Cat read various books to them.
- Rosspoint Elementary Science Fair Winners
- Evarts Elementary School's third grade reading class visits the Readers' Cafe: All You Can Eat Buffet, which is also known as the library, for a "book tasting".
- The Harlan County School District’s School Food Services recently sponsored presentations by Food Play at schools in the district.
- Black Mountain Elementary Science Fair Winners
- Members of the Harlan County High School Future Problem Solving Team show off their first place 13th region trophy. The team will be advancing to the state competition in March.

- The Harlan County School District has scheduled kindergarten registration and DIAL screening for the week before and the week after spring break, which is March 27-31.   Registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.

- The Harlan County High School boys and girls basketball teams have had an exciting few weeks with both winning District Championships and the boys moving on to win a Regional title while the girls finished as runner-up. The Black Bears have earned their first trip to Rupp Arena!

- Harlan County High School junior Autumn Dunaway was selected as legislative page for Senator Johnny Ray Turner.

- Evarts Elementary FRYSC Corps members Amber Davis and Stacie Ledford recently held a Reading Party for the school’s Kindergarten classes.

- Andrew Tolliver, a fifth grade student in Mr. Andy Howard’s class at Green Hills Elementary, won the school essay contest for Grandparent of the Year, sponsored by AARP.
- Fifth Graders at Cumberland participated in the AARP Grandparent of the Year essay contest. The school winner is Emily Honaker.

- Museum Comes to Black Mountain Elementary
- Cawood Elementary School students Lizzey Callahan, second grade, and Jacob McLemore, fourth grade, won bikes in the Breakfast Participation Contest held at the school.
- Students from Wallins Elementary School recently competed in and took second place overall at the Middle School Level in the Engineering Week Challenge. 
- James A Cawood Elementary School celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss by having a variety of activities. A highlight was guest readers who visited the school to take part in festivities.
- Wallins Elementary School recently held a Dr. Seuss Carnival at the school.
- Morgan J. Burke, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Monticello Banking Company Student Citizen Award recipient for March.


- Wallins Elementary 5th Grade students were able to go to the Challenger Learning Center in Hazard to perform some STEM Activities and go on a Mission to Mars.

- The Harlan County Community Scholarship Banquet is scheduled for Thursday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Harlan Center.
- Scholarship finalists named; tickets on sale for banquet
- Congratulations to Breanna Epperson and Chelsey Caldwell on being selected to represent Harlan County Schools in the 2017 class of Harlan County Leadership United. These young ladies will join others from throughout the community one day each month for the next seven months to strengthen their leadership skills and to work toward the betterment of Harlan County.

- Green Hills Elementary recently took grades 4-8 to Cumberland Falls State Resort Park for a guided tour of the falls and an educational program on snakes that were provided by park naturalists/interpreters.

- Twenty-two area high school seniors were awarded scholarships during the Harlan County Community Scholarship Banquet held at the Harlan Center.

- FREE SPORTS PHYSICALS: PT Pros will have their annual athletic screening on Friday, May 26th from 1-4pm for grades 4-12 for the 2017-2018 school year.   Cloverfork Clinic will be there as well to do the MD/PA portion.
