- Kindergarten students from Green Hills Elementary School recently visited Camp Nathaniel.
- Middle school academic teams from across the Harlan County School District competed in the first of two double elimination tournaments held at James A. Cawood Elementary School recently.
- The Cumberland Elementary FRYSC sponsored "Quality Care for Kids" vision & hearing screenings at CES on Aug. 28 & Sept. 1, 2017
- The Cumberland Elementary FRYSC sponsored the program, "Silly Saints" for grades K-4 on Sept. 12, 2017
- Cawood Elementary celebrated Grandparent’s Day on Wednesday, Sept. 13th by having breakfast with their grandchildren
- Cumberland Elementary School students celebrate Wacky Wednesday as part of school spirit week.

October:

- The October Board of Education meeting has been rescheduled for October 17th at 6:30 p.m.
- Congratulations to Miss Emily Rebecca Eldridge on being selected Miss Coal Bowl 2017.
- The Harlan County High School Golf Team recently participated in a tournament at Raven Rock with Letcher Central and Belfry.
- Congratulations to the Harlan County Lady Bears Cross Country Team on capturing their seventh district title and on winning the Black Bear Invitational recently.
- Congratulations to the Harlan County High School Black Bear Cross Country Team on winning their fourth straight district title this recently.
- The Evarts Elementary School Fall Festival will be held on Friday, October 13th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

- Harlan County High School Lady Bears Volleyball team will play Bell County, Monday October 16th, at 7:00 pm in the 52nd District Tournament being held at Bell County High School.

- In a ceremony marked by the traditional lighting of candles, the Harlan County High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 57 new members. 
- Congratulations to Harlan County High School junior Kylie Royce on being select Grand Champion in the 2017 Pam Holcomb Memorial Storytelling Showcase.
- Cumberland Elementary School kindergarten and first grade students participated in a fire safety activity recently. 
- While studying about the five senses, Kindergarten students in Mrs. Megan Saylor's class at Cumberland Elementary School participated in a popcorn sensory activity.
- Kindergarten Students at Cumberland Elementary made pizzas after reading the story "Pizza at Sally's" and studying about jobs.
- Kindergarten students at Cumberland Elementary school visited Hillview Stables Pumpkin Patch on Oct.3rd.
- Recently Mrs. Megan Saylor’s Kindergarten class at Cumberland Elementary participated in a pumpkin investigation!

November:

- School District Implements Custodial Inspection Program; Cawood Elementary Takes Top Honors in Inaugural Score, Evarts Second
- Black Mountain Elementary School kindergarten through second grade teachers dress as storybook characters
- Keesley Baker, Firewise program coordinator with Kentucky Division of Forestry, and Smokey the Bear recently did a fire prevention program to students of Evarts Elementary School.
- Area Family Resource and Youth Service Centers recently sponsored Baby Fest 2017 at the Harlan Depot.
- Harlan County Board of Education Members Myra Mosley and Pam Sheffield participate in the Kentucky School Boards Association regional meeting at the Corbin Center recently.
- Harlan County School Nutrition lunchroom managers and district staff have a new refrigeration truck that was recently purchased to provide important back up freezer protection during periods of extended power outages, mechanical malfunctions of lunchroom equipment and for the safe transportation of foods within the district.
- Ms. Megan Donahue’s 5th Grade Reading  Students at Cumberland Elementary recently took part in a peer leadership project entitled, “We Are All Wonders.”
- The Evarts Elementary School Library hosted a Pumpkin Book Character Contest! This fun project allowed students and teachers to collaborate, design, and create their favorite character(s) from a fictional book using pumpkins.
- The students at Cumberland Elementary attended the "Remix" program recently.
- Harlan County Schools Superintendent Brent Roark recently presented awards to the district's nine schools for their students' performance on the KPREP assessment.
- The Connecting with Characters Contest was held at the University of Kentucky in conjunction with the 2017 Anne McConnell Conference on Youth Literature (October 20). Students from Evarts Elementary won awards!
- Green Hills Elementary School hosted a Veteran’s Day Program on Friday November 10th. 
- Students in the third through the sixth grade at Cumberland Elementary School recently participated in a "Pumpkin Walk" activity.

- Breanna Epperson, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Monticello Banking Company Student Citizen Award recipient for November.
- Mrs. Terri Jenkins 3rd and 4th grade classes visited Portal 31 Underground Mine Tour in Lynch, Kentucky on Friday November 10, 2017.




December:

- Students in Kindergarten at Cumberland Elementary recently participated in making Gingerbread Houses

- Sixteen Harlan County High School Choir members recently participated in the 67th annual Southeastern Kentucky Music Association’s All-Festival Choir in London.
- Outstanding efforts by members of the Evarts Elementary School’s UNITE Club during the 2016-17 school year earned them the UNITE Excellence Award for elementary schools in the east region.
- Mrs. Terri Jenkins 4th Grade classes (61 students)  at Cumberland Elementary School participated in the “Mars Invasion 2030- From Coal Camp to Space Camp” at the Challenger Learning Center of Kentucky located in Hazard.
- Chelsey Caldwell, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Monticello Banking Company Student Citizen Award recipient for December.




January:

- The Harlan County Public Schools recently held the induction ceremony for the 2017 class of the Frank Brittain Academic & Athletic Hall of Fame.
- Sherman to represent Harlan County in state spelling bee; Brayden Morris wins top honors in primary division
- Evarts Elementary Academic Team wins 1st Place
- School board honors Alred; Reelects Farmer as chairman
- Harlan County wins 52nd District Governor’s Cup; Harlan takes second; Bell to host region Feb. 17
- Students in Mrs. Emily Jones’ gifted and talented group at James A. Cawood Elementary School visited the Challenger Space Center in Hazard on Wednesday.
- Autumn Dunaway, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Monticello Banking Company Student Citizen Award recipient for January.




February:

- Rosspoint wins Region 21 Governor’s Cup; Advancing to state
- Roark commends Board for support of HCHS dual credit program; students gaining substantial jump on college
- The Rosspoint Elementary School cheerleaders recently won the county cheer competition
- Elementary School Governor’s Cup competitions were held across the state on Saturday, February 10.  Area District winners included Page, District 119; Bell Central, District 120; Harlan, District 121; and Rosspoint District 122.
- Torstrick built legacy of excellence in Governor’s Cup
- JACES kindergarteners learn pro-social skills, empathy, kindness on ‘Mutt-i-gree Mondays
- Students in John Middleton's sixth-grade science class at Cawood Elementary School recently constructed model cells
- Black Mountain Elementary students have been preparing and practicing for an upcoming county archery tournament while coaches have been meeting and training to expand the sport in Harlan County Schools.
- HCHS students have been busy promoting school spirit as the Lady Bears and Black Bears compete in the 13th region tournament this week.
- Kentucky State Police Detective Josh Howard addresses the Harlan County High School student body about the seriousness of making and spreading rumors of threats.
- Second grade students at Wallins kicked off Read Across America week with Oobleck!
- Harlan County High School Senior Cristy Napier receives an award and a $100 check from Kentucky Association of Counties Member Services Representative Jody Ledesma for her artwork being selected as one of two top works for the association's calendar.
- Cumberland kindergarten students have a visit form the Cat in the Hat.

- Cameron Joseph Nease, a senior at Harlan County High School, was named the Monticello Banking Company Student Citizen Award recipient for February.




March:

- HCHS Spring Sports Schedules: Baseball, Softball, Tennis, Track & Field
- The HCHS Lady Bears and Cheerleaders both win Regional Championships!
- Tryouts for the Harlan County High School Dance Team will be held on April 16th - April 18th, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the HCHS gymnasium.  Tryout  forms are available in the elementary schools offices. An application is also available at the high school. Students will learn the tryout dance on Monday, the 16th, and then review the dance on the 17th. Actual tryouts will be held on the 18th.  Coaches are Anna Carruba and Lisa Layne.
- Harlan County Board of Education Member Pam Sheffield talks with Kentucky School Boards Association President David Webster of Simpson County during the KSBA winter conference held this past weekend in Louisville.
- HCHS Culinary Student Kieran Chadwick Participates in Chefs for Home Event an Louisville Country Club
- Archers from Black Mountain, Evarts and Green Hills met Friday at Black Mountain Elementary to open the Harlan County’s Middle School Archery season.
- HCHS students present community problem solving projects to legislators, others at state capitol.
- The students in Mrs. Joy Noe’s class at Evarts Elementary School made butter after reading “The Butter Battle Book” by Dr. Seuss.
- The Harlan County High School GEAR UP Club officers had a meeting with Judge Executive Dan Mosley about an upcoming community service project.
- The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Auxiliary’s National Headquarters rewarded Wallins Elementary & Jr. High School with the Youth Activities Award in recognition of our students and teachers supporting our Veterans on Veteran’s Day sponsored by First Priority.
- Emma Pinkley, a senior at Harlan County High School, has been named the Monticello Banking Company Student Citizen Award recipient for March.




April:

- The Harlan County High School Prom is scheduled for Saturday, April 28th.
- Kindergarten students at Cumberland Elementary School visited Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College recently to hunt Easter eggs.
- The 2018 Green Hills Elementary School Science Fair was held recently. Students in grades 5-8 participated in the science fair as it was incorporated into the school's science curriculum.

- Harlan County High School senior Paul Browning IV has received recognition for becoming the first HCHS student to complete criminal justice courses in the dual credit program provided at his high school by Eastern Kentucky University. 
- Congratulations to Harlan County High School Senior Breanna "Breezy" Epperson on being awarded the Kentucky Society Daughters of the American Revolution scholarship for her first place essay on "What it Means to Be A Patriot."
- Two Wallins students earn spots in the 2018 SKMA Honors Band
- Over 14,000 people participated in the Forging Innovation in Rural Education (FIRE) summit hosted by the 22 school districts of the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) in Pikeville on April 11.
- April is "Child Abuse Prevention" month.  Judge Executive Dan Mosely declared April as "Child Abuse Prevention Awareness" month in Harlan County by signing a proclamation for the County Family Resource and Youth Service Centers.
- Students in the Cumberland Elementary 21st CCLC afterschool program participated in a child abuse awareness activity on April 12, 2018.
- Congratulations to all of the winners in the recent Science Fair!
- Several teachers from Harlan County Public Schools recently completed the Kentucky Reading Project (KRP) sponsored by the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development.
- Kentucky Shakespeare recently visited Green Hills Elementary School where they performed “Twelfth Night” and held workshops for the students. 
- Pillowcase project helps prepare Cawood Elementary students and their families for emergencies.
- Students in grades kindergarten through sixth participated in the Mobile Dairy Classroom at Cawood Elementary School.
- Taylor Danielle Johnson, a 2018 graduate of Harlan County High School, has been named the Monticello Banking Company Student Citizen Award recipient for April.




May:

- Partnership allows expansion of Harlan County preschool program
- Scholarships awarded to local students
- Linda Parsons was honored during the Harlan County Community Scholarship Banquet for her three and half decades of service to the children of Harlan County as a member of the board of directors of the scholarship.
- Students from Ms. Megan Donahue’s 5th and 6th grade classes at Cumberland Elementary School recently took part in “Escape Room” activities to review for their upcoming state tests.
- GEAR UP took freshman and sophomores on a college tour of the University of Kentucky
- The Harlan County High School GEAR UP Club planted tress at Highslpint Park for a community service project. The trees were donated by Raymond Cox, Harlan County 4-H Youth Development Agent.
- The theme for the Green Hills Elementary School reading night was “Camp Out with a Good Book.”  Students participated in various activities that included the following stations:  “S’mores”, Game, Rhyming, Retelling, Puppet, and Bookmark. 
- Mrs. Diana Tipton’s and Ms. Karen Simpson’s second grade classes at James A. Cawood Elementary School participated in Arts and Humanities activities recently.  Each student tie dyed their own shirt.  Students engaged their creative sides by mixing colors, watching the colors blend into swirls and creating abstract images. 
- Ashley Brooke Hawkins, a 2018 graduate of Harlan County High School, has been named the Monticello Banking Company Student Citizen Award recipient for May.
- Gavin Ewald, a linebacker on the Harlan County Black Bear Football Team, recently had the opportunity to work out with University of Kentucky starting linebacker Kash Daniel.
- Harlan County High School student Kiki Dean has been selected for participation in the Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute offered through the Youth Programs at the Center for Rural Development.
- Breyden Daniels has been named a 2018 Rogers Explorer. Daniels is a recent graduate from Wallins Elementary School and an incoming freshman at Harlan County High School.
- At the annual 32nd Excellence in Teaching Ceremony, Campbellsville University recognized 169 teachers from 60 school districts. A total of 3,749 teachers have been recognized for their teaching excellence throughout the years. Harlan County – Brent Roark, superintendent; Faith Clem, Black Mountain Elementary School; Andy Howard, Green Hills Elementary School; and Alexandra Nau, Harlan County High School.
- Allison Cook, a member of the Harlan County High School Class of 2018 and daughter of Roy and Lisa Cook, was named the recipient of the Harlan County Schools Superintendent's Student Council Black Bear Kindness Award recently.
- The Cawood Elementary School Custodial Staff was honored with a "Clean Sweep Award" after winning all four of the 2017-2018 custodial inspections in the Harlan County School District.
- Christopher Brown, an incoming senior at Harlan County High School, has been awarded the 2018 University of Kentucky Book Award.
- Chelsey Caldwell and Breanna Epperson recently received leadership awards during the Harlan County High School awards program.
