About Us

Harlan County High School is located between the historical mountain chains of Pine Mountain and Black Mountain. HCHS is a centrally located, modern facility with 1,300 students in grades 9-12 unifying the communities along the Clover Fork, Martin’s Fork, and the Poor Fork rivers. This facility brings educational opportunities for Harlan County’s students into the 21st Century, providing them with the tools necessary for competing for jobs in today’s global economy.

Various programs provide students unique opportunities to focus their studies on career interests, college preparatory, military science, the world of work and the fine arts. Dual credit courses between HCHS and Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College allow students to gain credits qualifying them at the college sophomore level when graduating high school.

The Army JROTC provides a great opportunity for those students interested in pursuing military careers/service. After the cadets complete the four-year secondary program, students may enter post secondary and bypass the first two-years of the JROTC college program. In addition, those completing the high school program may enter the military at a higher level of service, such as an E-3 instead of an E-1, therefore substantially increasing monthly pay.

Exceptional Career and Technical Education programs prepare students with skills needed to join the workforce ready for work. These offerings include business, marketing and advertising, Cisco Academy, culinary arts, web design, computer maintenance, interior design, broadcasting (TV), and multi-media, such as photography and graphic arts.

The fine arts are prominent throughout the high school, with programs available in vocal performance, stage craft and theater, studio piano, jazz band, stage band, visual arts and pottery. Our fine arts programs and facilities provide a great foundation for students to develop their skills toward a career in the multi-billion dollar arts industry.
