Welcome to the HCHS Jazz Band's Website!

Harlan County High School's esteemed, award-winning Jazz Band is one part of our extensive music program. In this class, the students will memorize 4 different types of scales for every key (Major, Dorian, Mixolidian, and Blues), learn how to improve their pitch, and also learn to improvise. For those who may not know, a jazz band usually consists of a few trumpets, trombones, and saxophones, as well as a drummer, a keyboard player, a guitarist, and a bass player. This means that no matter what you play, you have a pretty good chance of getting in, as long as you work hard.

In addition to playing and performing at the school, the students will also get to perform at a wide variety of places, such as Morehead and EKU, as well as in front of expert Jazz musicians, in order to further hone their skills. Other than school concerts and Jazz competitions, we also have two Jazz honor bands that the students can join when they're ready.
