Federal programs provide funding and resources to states, and many of these programs are designed to help at-risk children. Foster Care

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) emphasizes the educational stability of vulnerable students, including those in foster care. Children in foster care face many educational barriers, including traumatization, high mobility, and undiagnosed behavioral and health conditions.

Kentucky's 21st Century Community

Federal program funding includes a wide range of direct assistance programs to local schools and districts which provide funding for programs Title IV, Part B, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) (20 U.S.C.7171-7176) recognizes that improved student achievement occurs when communities implement programs and strategies scientifically proven to be effective.

School and Community Nutrition

Good nutrition makes a vital contribution to physical development and cognitive performance. KDE administers several programs that deliver quality nutrition and nutrition education to Kentucky students and other citizens. In addition to the important mission of providing fuel for growth and learning, these programs bring into Kentucky more than $150 million annually in federal reimbursement funds, employ several thousands of our fellow citizens and utilize thousands of dollars worth of commodities produced by American farmers. For far too many of our children, the meals that they receive through these programs are the only meals they receive that are planned with their nutritional needs in mind.

Federal program funding includes a wide range of direct assistance programs to local schools and districts which provide funding for programs that boost student achievement, and provide additional resources to engender a supportive environment for students.
